Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) pose some unique challenges to VR agencies and service providers. DPS staff are planning several additional resources to help inform VR professionals on emerging promising practices. These include:
Many features of traditional vocational assessment pose significant barriers to people with ASD. TACE staff, working with ASD experts, are reconfiguring vocational assessment practices to better match common characteristics and support needs of people with ASD.
Working with James Emmett, a national leader in ASD employment surpports, TACE staff are developing a serise of short, multi-media lessons. Each will last approximately 10 minutes and will focus on a key aspect of employment supports for people with ASD.
James Emmett, a national elader in ASD employment supports, will work with the Region 7 TACE to provide online trainings. The focus will be job development and support for perople with ASD. These will be open to all VR agency staff, employment service providers, and other interested organizations. There will likely be a registration fee, but it has not been decided yet.
Preliminary discussions are underway for DPS to host a national conference on ASD and employemnt. The tentative plans are to hold the conference in Kansas City in the Spring of 2010.
